Prevent acne
scars
How
many are the types of scars?
Scars are
characterized by the presence of fibrous tissue following
either the loss or gain of extra tissue in response to
inflammation followed by healing. The scars formed by extra
tissue formation are known as ‘Hypertrophic’ and ‘Keloid’
scars. They appear as raised, irregular, rigid structures of
various forms and sizes ranging from a couple of millimeters to
one centimeter in area.
What are the distinguishing features of Acne
Scars?
The scars
caused by loss of tissue include ice pick acne scars, depressed
fibrotic scars, soft scars and follicular atrophy. The scars
caused by loss of tissue have different depth or depression and
few like follicular atrophy may appear flush with the surface
of the skin. Scars are also distinguished from the surrounding
skin on account of different color ,which may be lighter or
darker, depending upon the type of acne and the period of
repair. Another distinguishing feature of scars is that they
are very sensitive to ultra violet rays and do not develop
sweat glands or hair follicles later on.
What do the scar handling practices aim
at?
Different
practices are used to eliminate or minimize scars and mostly
they aim at stimulation of Collagen formation, Elastin
formation, and dead cells replacement, formation of binding
outside the cells and formation of moisture retaining
molecules. These practices also utilize improved blood
circulation and antiseptics to prevent pathogenicity
(prevention of disease causing bacteria).

How to
prevent Acne Scars?
Skins and
scars differ widely, as not all the people have similar types
of skins and not all the scars are similar in size, shape,
form, depth or color. Everyone therefore requires a customized
treatment. Acne Scar Treatments too differ in method,
intensity, duration of treatment and cost. Some superficial
treatments are limited to concealing rather than treating the
scars. This method too has some cosmetic value but it must be
kept in mind that cosmetics used for the purpose should be
preferably oil free otherwise they may invite microbial
infection and aggravate the condition. Some Acne Scar
treatments require use of preventive strips to be applied daily
for many hours. This type of treatment costs less in monetary
terms but more so, from aesthetic point of view. Abrasion is
the ultimate treatment but requires lot of money, patience and
time. Suction Micro laser peel and Sciton Profraction laser
utilize the laser technology but they too are not free of some
side effects.
