scars
Of the currently
available methods, laser resurfacing for acne scars, is
the latest technique. It employs the use of continuously
pulsating beam of laser rays directed towards affected
like a shower. Based on the materials used for supporting
the process for simultaneous cooling, the process is
further specified as carbon dioxide or
Erbium Laser

scars.
Laser Resurfacing for Acne
Scars
Resurfacing is the
process of removing papillary dermis through penetration
by laser beams, thereby removing the scars or wrinkles.
This process results in the formation of collagen and new
epithelial layers of skin in replacement of the
exfoliated cells.
How the process of
resurfacing is
applied?
Local
anesthetic is applied to the area to be resurfaced.
Depending upon the discretion of the dermatologist, oral
sedatives are also administered. The patient is provided
with dark protective goggles as prevention from any
adverse effects of laser beam during application. The
treated area is then covered with sterile band aid for
one day. Twice or thrice a day the treated area is
cleansed with saline or any other suitable mild
antiseptic like dilute vinegar.

What happens after
treatment?
The process
has to be repeated several times, depending upon the
severity of the problem.
As
a
preventive measure, it is
advisable to keep the area under treatment constantly
sterile. The first impact after treatment is usually
discouraging.
How effective is
resurfacing?
A prospective
survey conducted by Batra RS of Dermatology, Stanford
University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, USA. Reveals that 37 % patients
, approximately three days after treatment were
‘concerned’ while another 11 % considered the experience
as terrible. However after three months the statistics
revealed that 75 % recommended the treatment. The study
concluded that observed data was helpful in patient
preparation and developing understanding between surgeon
and patient.
What is the
prerequisite for
resurfacing?
Thorough
consultation on each and every aspect of resurfacing with
a dermatologist having verifiable track record, is of
crucial importance. It is better not to opt it than to
cut a sorry face after a hasty decision. Success of the
operation depends upon individual conditions and what has
been good or bad for someone may not be the same for you
too. Important information to be collected is the,
expected rate of success, any foreseeable side effects,
duration of the treatment , availability of corrective
measures in case something goes wrong and last but not
the least ,the financial involvement including any post
operative maintenance or recurring expenses. It is
advisable to see the possibility of preliminary test
treatment on a deep scar situated on a less prominent
area. It will build your confidence.
Which one of the
two available modes is more
suitable?
There are two
modes of resurfacing, one utilizes Erbium and the other
utilizes Carbon Dioxide for cooling.
Erbium penetrates less hence suitable
for wrinkles while carbon dioxide penetrates deeper hence
more suitable for scars. It is however the dermatologist
who has to decide finally what is more suitable in your
case.
