Does milk
cause acne?
Milk is a well
balanced and ideal food designed by nature for the infant
to facilitate the mother in early days of lactation. As
such milk seems to be above suspicion but some ground
realities have prompted the question that, “does
milk cause acne?’. Fact is that by default milk
is intended as a food for infants and not for adolescents
who suffer most from acne.
Age and chemicals
correlation
Consider ‘Renin; an enzyme, which
calculated on content per body weight is present in
infants, far more in excess compared with the quantity in
adults. Simple reason is that rennin helps digestion of
milk and since infants are bigger consumers of milk they
have more of rennin in their bodies. Chemical needs have
a correlation with age. The hormone content of milk is
not harmful for the infant but it is so for the
adolescents particularly in reference to causing
acne.
Does milk cause
acne?
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is one of the
hormones contained in milk .It resembles like the male
hormone ‘testosterone’ in action and causes acne in the
milk consuming adolescents. Sometimes ‘Oxytocine’ is
administered to cows to facilitate ‘milk let down’; a
phenomenon that relaxes the sphincter muscle responsible
for holding milk in the udder prior to release from the
teat canal. This hormone too, in some or the way plays a
role in hormonal disbalance with consequent development
of acne. Thereare other hormones too in milk that
directly or indirectly influence the development of
acne. Progesterone, a female hormone in
contrast to the other female hormone ‘estrogen’’ behaves
like the male hormones ‘androgens’ and causes acne
development among growing boys and girls who like to
consume milk finding it easy to drink than to
eat.

How do the hormones
realize acne
production?
Hormones are
messenger chemicals and at the advent of puberty, summon
increased production of sebum (the hair oil) which is
susceptible to Lipolysis (fat splitting) when attacked by
Propionibacterium acne. The infection results in the
prolific growth of bacteria. Some other commensals; like
staphylococcus aureus, too infect and ‘lyse’ sebum along
with production of puss. In case of white heads the pores
remain closed and the puss cells containing material
remains deoxidised therefore is not blackened. If left
undisturbed, the bacteria grow initially very slowly than
at an accelerated rate followed by a stabilized growth
with ultimate decline and death. White heads should not
be punctured and should the urge be too irresistible; let
them be handled by an aesthetician. Any carelessness may
result in permanent scars and blemishes on your
face.
Are the milk
hormones
acnegenic?
A plain answer
to the question that, is the milk
hormones acne
producing, or does milk cause acne, is yes. The
answer is however subject to the quality of milk
consumed, the quantity of the consumed milk and the age
of the consumer. Not every liter of milk contains the
same amount of hormones; therefore the acne producing
potential also depends upon the hormone content of the
consumed milk.
